DLS Design: Web Design Case Studies
Client: Education Without Boundaries
Background: Education Without Boundaries was started in 2005 by Paige Fern and other students originating at Amherst College in Massachussets, and extending over time to other locations. EWB provides educational opportunities to women and children in seriously distressed regions of the world, including Sierra Leone, Vietnam and Argentina.
The focus of EWB's first project was building a school in Sierra Leone, where a long period of war left the population seriously traumatized and without schools.
Assignment: DLS was approached to design a web site conveying the mission, and spirit of EWB. We were asked to design a web site, logo and fundraising brochure. We decided to donate our services in the design and production of the first two pieces, and charge a reduced rate for the third.
Process: The web site was designed first, using a simple navigation scheme and a dark background pattern against which pictures would stand out. The logo was designed at the same time; it was an organic part of the page. DLS wanted to use a symbol that was childlike but not overly representational, and we chose a star shape for the torso. The star was appropriate because of the centrality of children to the projects run by EWB, but the shape was not deliberately played up. This project was designed and produced during the spring and summer of 2005; in the fall we designed the fundraising brochure.
